Search Intent - See also: Keyword Intent. What the person typing a query actually wants - the answer they're looking for. Matching content to search intent is the single most important on-page SEO factor.
In more depth
Search intent (interchangeable with keyword intent in most contexts) is the underlying motivation behind a search query. Google's algorithm is designed to identify this intent and serve results that satisfy it - which means that matching your content format and message to the correct intent is the most fundamental on-page SEO decision you can make.
The search results page itself is the clearest guide to intent. When you search a keyword and look at the top 3 organic results, Google has already determined what type of content best satisfies that query. If the results are all product pages, Google believes users want to buy. If they're all how-to guides, Google believes users want to learn. If they're comparison articles, users are evaluating options. Your content needs to match this format or it will consistently fail to rank regardless of other optimisation.
Intent can shift with very small keyword changes. "Best project management software" (commercial - evaluating options) requires a different page from "project management software" (could be navigational or commercial) or "how to use project management software" (informational). Each of these needs a different content format, even though all three relate to the same broad topic. Building a content strategy around intent mapping - not just keyword volume - is the difference between SEO that compounds and SEO that stalls.

Frequently asked questions
How do I identify search intent for a keyword?
Search the keyword yourself and study the top 5 organic results. What type of content are they (product pages, blog posts, comparison articles, videos)? What format do they use? What questions do they answer? This 'SERP analysis' tells you exactly what Google believes users want. Build content that matches this format while providing a better experience than existing results.
Can search intent change over time?
Yes - intent for a keyword can shift as user behaviour changes or as a topic evolves. 'ChatGPT' in 2022 showed mostly news articles (informational about what this new tool is). By 2024, results shifted to include product comparison pages and tutorials. Monitor rankings for pages targeting trending topics and be prepared to update both content and format as intent shifts.
