E-E-A-T - Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trust - Google's framework for evaluating content quality. Strong E-E-A-T signals (real authors, credentials, citations, reviews) are especially important for YMYL (Your Money or Your Life) topics like health and finance.
In more depth
E-E-A-T is documented in Google's Search Quality Evaluator Guidelines and represents Google's attempt to codify what makes content trustworthy and valuable to users. The framework was originally E-A-T (without the first E), but Google added "Experience" in December 2022 to distinguish between theoretical expertise and first-hand lived experience with a topic.
Each component addresses a different dimension of credibility: Experience asks "has this person actually done the thing they're writing about?"; Expertise asks "do they have the knowledge and credentials to speak authoritatively?"; Authoritativeness asks "do other credible sources recognise them as a leading voice?"; and Trust - which Google calls the most important component - asks "is this content accurate, transparent, and free of deceptive practices?"
For Australian businesses, E-E-A-T is particularly important in regulated industries: financial advice, legal services, medical information, and real estate. In these YMYL (Your Money or Your Life) sectors, Google holds content to a higher standard because incorrect information could cause tangible harm to users. See our full guide to E-E-A-T in practice.

Frequently asked questions
Is E-E-A-T a direct ranking factor?
Not in the sense of a specific algorithmic signal you can measure. E-E-A-T is a quality framework that Google's human raters use to evaluate pages - it informs how Google trains its algorithms but isn't a single checkable metric. The signals that demonstrate E-E-A-T (author credentials, citations, reviews, accurate content) are what influence rankings.
How do I improve my site's E-E-A-T?
Name and credential your authors. Cite authoritative sources in your content. Earn mentions and backlinks from credible industry sources. Collect and display third-party reviews. Keep content accurate and dated. Add clear About Us and Contact pages. Each of these builds the trust and authority signals that Google's quality systems reward.
